100 Wi-Fi Phones Now (Almost) Certified

VNUnet's Robert Jaques reports that the Wi-Fi Alliance is about to certify its 100th Wi-Fi phone.

"The growth in certification reflects the momentum for Wi-Fi cellular phones, and carriers' enthusiasm for the unique voice and data capabilities Wi-Fi adds to a handset," says Wi-Fi Alliance managing director Frank Hanzlik.

ABI Research predicts that in 2011, more than 325 million converged Wi-Fi/cellular phones and 15 million single-mode wi-fi phoneslinks will be shipped. "Smartphones have led the way for embedded Wi-Fi in cellular handsets to provide faster data access," says ABI analyst Philip Solis.

More here from TechWorld ... more here from Wi-Fi Planet ... and the Wi-Fi Alliance's unfortunately illegible press release is here.
