ABI Sez 4G Will Be Cheaper

According to Electronic News' Colleen Taylor, a new report from ABI Research entitled Mobile Handset Royalties states that while just 12 companies own 80 percent of the essential WCDMA intellectual property, the royalty landscape for 4G technology will be "far more diverse," resulting in much lower royalty rates than are in place for 3G.

"A more diverse 4G IP landscape will allow more companies to trade licenses rather than be required to pay royalty fees to access others' IP," says ABI analyst Stuart Carlaw. "This will result in low average royalty rates. This diverse IP landscape will not be a product of litigation or regulation, but of pure market mechanisms."
