Adaptix Sues Sprint/Clearwire Over WiMax Patents

Adaptix this week filed a lawsuit against Sprint and Clearwire, claiming the companies are infringing on six of Adaptix's WiMax patents.

"The lawsuit is seeking an injunction, legal fees and unspecified damages from Sprint and Clearwire, which recently merged their 4G WiMax operations in hopes of rolling out a nationwide WiMax network," writes eWeek's Roy Mark.

"It's impossible to evaluate the validity of these claims, since nobody outside of Clearwire and their suppliers is fully aware of precisely how their hardware and software stack operate," notes Ars Technica's John Timmer. "So far, neither it nor Sprint have commented on the suit."

"A permanent injunction could be disastrous for Sprint, as WiMax is rushing to gain traction before Long Term Evolution hits the market," writes InformationWeek's Marin Perez. "LTE is a potentially faster 4G mobile broadband technology that has the backing of most major wireless carriers around the world. But WiMax has a head start of at least a year before LTE networks gets deployed, and this lawsuit could potentially derail that advantage…"
