Wi-Fi Planet's Eric Griffith reports today on North American Midway Entertainment's efforts to go wireless. The company provides rides at over 130 events each year in 19 U.S. states and 4 Canadian provinces. On one of its routes this year, it's setting up a Wi-Fi mesh network at each stop with equipment from Firetide.
The primary application, Griffith says, is e-ticketing. The company's "Magic Pass" can be purchased in advance and printed out at home, or purchased at the park. It comes with a bar code that's scanned at each ride with a Symbol Technologies handheld scanner. The Magic Pass also works for food purchases and park admission.
"We save on paper tickets and having to manage that inventory," says Robert Perkins, the company's executive vice president. "[The network] gives more flexibility in the types of pricing schemes, and creative pricing and discounts."
