ZDNet's Matthew Broersma reports that UK carrier Aql launched a service today allowing Nokia E-Series users to make free VoIP calls over Wi-Fi.
"Aql is one of a number of providers looking to take advantage of the growing interest in making low-cost or free VoIP calls over Wi-Fi-enabled handsets," Broersma writes. "In July, for instance, VoIP service Skype told ZDNet UK it expects to see handsets with GSM, Wi-Fi and the Skype client on the market by the end of the year."
Phones like the Nokia E60, E61 and E70 allow users to make calls over both Wi-Fi and GSM networks. "It is ideal for frequent travellers, for example, as there are no roaming charges," says company managing director Adam Beaumont. "Since most good hotels now offer Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile users will have the potential to call home free of charge from wherever they are in the world."
