Yesterday, Dell announced plans to buy wireless digital media software company Zing Systems, signaling a move into the MP3 player market...

"The acquisition is the latest move in Dell's ongoing campaign to revamp its consumer offerings after falling behind rival HP in the home PC market," writes VNUnet's Shaun Nichols.

"So far, [Zing's] designs have found their way into products that leave the iPod behind in terms of functionality," notes Wired's Eliot Van Buskirk. "If they let the Zing team continue to work their magic, Dell could stand a better chance of cracking the portable entertainment market than it did last time, especially if it can beat Apple to the punch on integrating a music store into the player."
