EarthLink and GCi Team to Sell Muni Wi-Fi Access

Wi-Fi Planet's Eric Griffith reports today that Boston-based GetConnected, Inc. (GCi) has announced plans to sell EarthLink's municipal Wi-Fi access at kiosks in retail outlets like Best Buy and Circuit City.
"Through GCi, retailers in EarthLink's muni-Fi cities can resell access to the network, even doing a credit check on the customer through GCi's platform," Griffith writes. "EarthLink also wholesales access on its networks to third parties like DirecTV, but there's no word on if those partners will be able to get customers through the GCi option. EarthLink says the key to their muni-Fi success is acceptance in the consumer market, thus this deal to focus on increasing adoption."
"GCi will enable us to expand our sales channel into local market retail locations," says EarthLink executive vice president Donald Berryman. "We want to make it as easy as possible to subscribe to our Wi-Fi services, so their solution allows us to scale our sales opportunities as we build out more networks throughout the United States."
