EarthLink Gets Houston

The Houston Chronicle's Alexis Grant and Matt Stiles report that the City of Houston, Texas today selected EarthLink Municipal Networks to provide it with a citywide wireless network.
"While the agreement with EarthLink still needs City Council approval, its terms put Houston in line to have the largest such network in North America, covering nearly all of the city's 600 square miles by spring of 2009," the article states.
According to city mayor Bill White, EarthLink will be required to offer access to ISPs at a wholesale rate of $12 per subscriber per month, to which the ISPs would then add a profit margin
and resell access to residents and business. And for about 40,000 low-income residents, the price will be $10 a month or lower.
