Freescale Hits a Stumbling Block

According to TG Daily's Tom Higgins, Belkin has delayed shipment for its new ultrawideband (UWB) CableFree USB hub until July. The product, which won numerous awards at CES 2006, was supposed to ship in April. Higgins writes that "neither belkin, nor Freescale Semiconductor — the supplier of the UWB technology used in the product — would respond to queries about the reason for the slip."

The same is true, apparently, for Gefen Inc., whose Wireless USB Extender uses the same Freescale technology.

"The delay could indicate that Freescale is having trouble with its CableFree USB technology, which is based on the UWB Forum's core ultrawideband technology," Higgins writes. "It would also put Freescale in a neck-and-neck race with the WiMedia Alliance for bragging rights to the first commercially available ultrawideband products. The new July ship date is in the same timeframe as the 'first products by mid-year' claimed by WiMedia Alliance members during January's Consumer Electronics show."
