Geeks Know: Free Antivirus Programs Offer Great Value
I realized not long ago that I may actually be a bonafide geek. I don't know for sure what the definition is, but I live in a house with two adults, one dog, one PC, three laptops, a netbook, a couple of Palms, a cell phone and an iPod. That's a three to one ratio of digital devices to living things.
If being a geek is defined behaviorally (instead of in terms of gadget ownership), I probably still qualify. I boot my computer up on my way to the coffee pot in the morning, sit with my laptop in front of my while I watch TV, and check my email again as a last act each night before bed.
But perhaps the biggest clue that I have become a full fledged geek is this: I've realized that the biggest threat to a normal, stable life is the computer virus. How do you prevent them? How do you keep from getting them…?
We all know the normal software packages that say they'll protect us from viruses – for forty or fifty bucks a year. Don't mess with them. Find a free antivirus program. Most work as well or better than the pay software packages. You can take my word for it; I'm a geek…
