TechNewsWorld's Gene J. Koprowski reports that home wireless
networks are fueling the growth in sales of wireless devices, and will continue to do so for the next five years.
A new Strategy Analytics report, Wireless Home Devices Global Market Forecast, predicts that homeowners worldwide will buy 940 million home wireless devices by 2012, including game consoles, wireless MP3 players and connected TVs.
"Leading edge broadband users are keen to make the most of their service by connecting multiple devices to their home network," says Strategy Analytics' Peter King.
And wireless carriers are encouraging the trend. Verizon and GN Netcom last week announced an agreement to develop a series of headsets designed for online gaming and IP telephony. "The headsets are the perfect complement to our services, including online gaming, music, video and other entertainment services," says Verizon's Andrea Fant-Hobbs.
"Our vision of the digital home is one where a variety of digital devices use wireless home networking technologies to seamlessly interact with each other and with the available broadband and digital services," says Strategy Analytics' David Mercer. "This vision is being realized."
