HP and Cingular Announce the Multi-Mode HP iPAQ hw6920

TMCnet's Niladri Sekhar Nath reports that Cingular Wireless has teamed up with HP to offer a new multi-mode PDA smartphone, the HP iPAQ hw6920 Mobile Messenger, which supports five wireless communications technologies -- Cingular's nationwide GSM/GPRS/EDGE network, Wi-Fi, GPS, infrared and Bluetooth.
The built-in GPS receiver makes for a particularly good pairing with Cingular's recently-announced TeleNav GPS Navigator solution. "HP iPAQ users can get turn-by-turn voice and onscreen directions directly on the device when driving or walking," Nath writes. "TeleNav GPS Navigator offers information on over 10 million points of interest and additional search tools as well. The system is available as a subscription service from Cingular."
"We're psyched to see that the new smartphone will have many flavors of wireless including EDGE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth," writes Gizmodo's Louis Ramirez. "The phone's camera coulda been better (it's only one megapixel), but the three-inch screen should be good for framing
shots (and for our failing eyes)."
PC Magazine's Sascha Segan observes, "Notably absent from the new iPAQs -- and from all of Cingular's smart devices -- is support for Cingular's new 3G HSDPA network, which gives broadband-like download speeds. Verizon and Sprint have had 3G handhelds available for more than a year now."
The iPAQ hw6920 is available to business customers for $359.99 with a two-year contract. It's also available direct from HP for $579.
