IBM and MediaTek today announced plans to develop chipsets based on millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless tech, promising speeds 100 times faster than Wi-Fi.
"The technology seeks to harness the highest frequency portion of the radio spectrum, which can accommodate huge flows of data," explains Red Herring's Ken Schachter. "How long it will take to develop the chipsets remains unclear, though IBM demonstrated a prototype in February 2006."
"The companies will promote mmWave as a way to eliminate wires between HD-TVs, set-top boxes, DVD players and PCs," writes PC World's Dan Nystedt.
