Engadget's Darren Murph today picks up on a Dailywireless.org report noting that the IEEE "has begun working on a new version of the 802.16 [wimax] standard, dubbed 802.16m."
The aim of the new version, Murph says, will be to push data speeds up to 1 Gbps -- and that's not all. "Potentially more interesting than cheering for speed boosts is the group's outright assurance that this protocol will meet the ITU's requirements for 4G, insinuating that it should be the token choice for further 4G developments," he writes.
No rush, though: the aim is to have the standard ready by "the end of 2009."

802.16m could be answer to the challenge of very high bandwidth > 1Gbps in the last mile, especially to enterprises. This is now served by wired gigabit ethernet
