Ireland’s Metakall Gets €400,000 Grant for VoIP over Wi-Fi

ENN's Emmet Ryan reports today that Enterprise Ireland has given a Grant of €400,000 to "a project aimed at providing telephone users with low cost calls," otherwise known as VoIP over Wi-Fi.
"The project, called Metakall, is being conducted by researchers at the Centre for Telecommunications Value Chain Research (CTVR) which is based in Trinity College Dublin," Ryan writes. "Metakall's software uses public wireless hotspots and the Internet as the network infrastructure. Using the new technology, CTVR aims to develop a means for consumers to roam and pay-as-you go at low cost rates, using a laptop or Wi-Fi-enabled phone wherever the wireless Internet is available."
Metakall, the company, is already in place as a commercial spinoff of the project, promising to offer VoIP over Wi-Fi with per-minute pricing and no setup fees or minimums.
