's military is going to start a pilot program on March 2nd to explore the potential applications of WiBro technology. "We plan to form a pan-governmental task force to study the application of the advanced mobile technology for the military and its weapons development," says Col. Koh Won-gook of the Ministry of National Defense's Information and Technology Department. The new technology, Koh says, should make the country's military more mobile on the battlefield within five years. Soldiers will be able to exchange data, images and voice calls on PDAs -- and will be given small, easily deployable wireless sensors for electronic detection and control. "WiBro is expected to increase the military's surveillance capability to a great extent," he says.
This is all part of the Defense Ministry's "Defense Reform 2020" initiative for building a more advanced military. Last September, the Ministry announced a $33.9 million project to build "combat robots" within the next ten years. The robots will be armed with "state-of-the-art weapons," and will either be directed by remote control, or -- this is really scary -- will move autonomously via their own artificial intelligence systems.
