Microsoft Wants a Do-Over

On July 31st, the FCC rejected a prototype device from Microsoft and other members of the White Spaces Coalition, which was designed to operate in TV spectrum without interfering with existing TV channels. According to the FCC, the device did in fact interfere with existing channels, and so it was rejected.

Today, in a letter to the FCC, Microsoft stated that the device had simply malfunctioned during the test when it failed to detect and avoid occupied spectrum. The company is asking the FCC to re-test a repaired device - while the National Association of Broadcasters is (no big surprise) asking the FCC to let the first test results stand...
