Microsoft’s Zune Adds Wi-Fi Downloads, FM Tagging and More

Microsoft

Microsoft today announced that, starting on September 16th, Zune users will be able to download or stream songs directly to the device via Wi-Fi. The company is also launching new 16GB ($199) and 120GB ($249) versions of the player, along with a new blue color scheme.

"The biggest new feature is something I've been hoping Microsoft would do with the Zune ever since it launched two years ago: wireless connectivity to the Zune Marketplace from any public Wi-Fi hotspot," writes CNET News' Matt Rosoff. "With a subscription Zune Pass – $14.99 per month – this means you can now listen to any of the three-million plus songs in the marketplace on demand from a huge variety of locations."

"The remote access feature will also improve a pair of additional features," according to Electronista. "The FM radio now supports tagging songs identified by the player that can later be purchased, either directly from the Zune or when it returns to its host PC. Microsoft's Zune Marketplace also has hand-picked playlists dubbed Channels that are updated over time and can be refreshed on the player over the wireless link."
