According to MuniWireless, Los Angeles is planning to expand its free public wireless Internet service in 2007. The Board of Commissioners of the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA/LA) has announced $225,000 in contract extensions and enhancements to build out the network to four additional city districts.
The network, such as it is, currently supports just Pershing Square. The extension would bring it to the financial district, Bunker Hill and Little Tokyo.
"JoVoGo Communications, which installed equipment for the initial deployment in Pershing Square, will buy and install the new Wi-Fi equipment under a $165,000 contract renewal," the article states. "In addition to enabling Internet access in the districts, the contract calls for the installation of Wi-Fi security cameras in areas of Little Tokyo and Angels Knoll Interim Park."
In the meantime, PR is an issue: as one respondent posted at Broadband Reports, "I didn't know we even had a public Wi-Fi network..."
