Murdoch Moves in on WiMAX

GigaOM's Katie Fehrenbacher looks at Rupert Murdoch's efforts to get into WiMAX through his stake in DirecTV. Murdoch could either partner with Clearwire or go after his own spectrum, though the Hollywood Reporter says a partnership with Clearwire
is the most likely scenario.
At the same time, Murdoch still may be keeping his options open regarding the FCC spectrum auctions in August. "FCC files say a group called Wireless DBS, which is backed by DirecTV, News Corp, Fox Entertainment, EchoStar, Rupert Murdoch and EchoStar's Charles Ergen among others, are looking to bid -- though the application is incomplete, and today is the last day to update it," Fehrenbacher writes.
Diane Mermigas' excellent Hollywood Reporter article goes into detail on Murdoch's WiMAX goals. "While WiMAX is not considered an ultimate distribution panacea, there are many enterprising ways in which such companies as DirecTV and News Corp. would use the interactive network to provide unique branded content, commerce and services directly to lucrative out-of-home platforms that include iPod-like video players, cell phones, PDAs, personal media players, cars and next-generation mobile devices," Mermigas writes.
