Rep. Lamar Smith and Sen. John Cornyn this week introduced the Internet Safety Act, which creates sweeping requirements for data retention, not only for ISPs but for anyone managing a wireless router...
"The Bill, as written, doesn't just apply to big ISPs, but to anyone providing Internet access - meaning all of you with your home routers fall under this law and will need to keep log files for two years or, you know, be accused of helping child predators," notes Techdirt's Mike Masnick.
"Most people don't know how to even set up the wireless security on their home networks, and this bill would mandate that such people get new routers that can be in compliance with this law, and to be able to configure them for recording everything they do online," writes Culture11's Mike Thomsen.
"The US seems to be competing with the UK in ever more bizarre measures to spy on its citizens," writes Fudzilla's Nick Farrell.
