New York State Intros RFID-Enabled Enhanced Drivers License

The State of new York this week started offering its citizen the option of purchasing a new, RFID-enabled Enhanced Driver's License.

"The radio frequency identification chip in the EDL will be able to be scanned by authorities to identify citizens entering the state from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean," writes CNET's Antuan Goodwin. "Intercontinental travelers will still need to produce a passport to enter the country."

"The RFID chip will not transmit personal information such as your name, birth date, and Social Security number, but it will contain an ID number that will identify you as a US citizen to Customs agents," explains PC World's Scott Nichols.

"The Enhanced Drivers License costs just $30 in addition to the usual fees," writes Wired's Priya Ganapati. "Any guesses on how secure these licenses will be from hackers?"

What is most scary about this is really two things. One, that we are not in control nor can we monitor what data is encoded into these chips. Two, the ready availability of the equipment to the hacker community. It’s also in our banking instruments.
I found the Armadillo Dollar is a good, low-cost solution. It wraps around your suspect cards and blocks the antennas, neutralizing them until their ready to use.
It’s only $30, and it blocks every frequency of RF tag I tested it on.

You want to learn to hack these cards (and credit cards and bank cards and proximity cards)? Go to http://www.RFIDiot.org.
Want to stop them? The only thing on the market I found that works is something called “The Armadillo Dollar”.
I think the url is http://www.ArmadilloDollar.com
