Nokia’s Next Internet Tablet to Kick Ass

Nokia's Next Internet Tablet to Kick Ass

CNET News' Jo Best looks at the future of Nokia's 770 Internet Tablet, noting that non-cellular connectivity is key to the solution.

"We don't want to be part of the cellular value chain," says Ari Virtanen, Nokia's Vice President of Convergence Products.

"We want to be a little bit out of that world," Virtanen says. "Once you put a SIM card in, it's automatically controlled by the operator."

The next generation of the device, Best says, will probably add new interface methods. "The device currently uses a touch screen with a stylus for text input, though thumb-happy typers can switch to a more clumsy digit input mode with the virtual keyboard expanded to almost the full screen size," she writes.

And according to Virtanen, a webcam is a likely addition as well. The idea behind any new functionality, he says, is to look at how people interact with the fixed Internet, then add a mobile dimension — which is what led to the addition of Google Talk and VoIP in the current model.

WiMAX, Virtanen says, is also possible. "If WiMAX takes off like wireless LAN has, then why not?" he says.
