Review Roundup: Motorola DROID

The reviews are already starting to pile up for the Motorola DROID, coming November 6th to Verizon Wireless — and I’ve gotta admit, it’s making me seriously consider getting rid of my iPhone…

Wired’s Priya Ganapati writes, "Overall, Droid makes the iPhone 3G look a little tired, the BlackBerry boring, and the Palm Pre an after-thought. The Droid doesn’t have a single ‘wow’ feature. Rather, it’s the combination of solid phone, smart user interface, and Verizon’s kick-ass network that makes the Droid a cut above most smartphones. If it were 2 ounces lighter and had a better keyboard (or no keyboard at all), it would be hands-down the best smartphone on the market today. As it is, it’s a solid contender in a market that has too long been dominated by just one top-quality handset."

MobileCrunch’s Greg Kumparak writes, "What do I think of the Droid? It is incredible. It is, hands down, the nicest Android handset on the market. A very significant chunk of this is not so much the Droid’s doing as it is Android 2.0’s, but the hardware is also leaps and bounds better than anything we’ve seen so far."

PC World’s Robert S. Anthony writes, "The Motorola Droid certainly stands out among the growing Android army due to its superior hardware and enhanced 2.0 software. But will the Android Marketplace catch up to the iPhone’s App Store? Therein lies the key to success for the Droid. The Droid certainly lives up to its promises and does a lot of things the iPhone doesn’t. The iPhone will probably keep its smartphone throne for now, but it will have to deal with a powerful new competitor."

Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky writes, "It’s easily the best Android phone to date, and when you couple the revamped OS, Verizon’s killer network, and an industrial design straight from a gadget enthusiast’s fever-dream, it makes for a powerful concoction. Ultimately, the DROID won’t usurp the iPhone from the public’s collective mindshare or convince casual users that they must switch to Android, but it will make a lot of serious geeks seriously happy — and that’s good enough for us."

And PC Mag’s Sascha Segan writes, "The Droid isn’t an iPhone killer. It doesn’t have to be. The iPhone doesn’t need to be ‘killed’ — there’s room for more than one smartphone in America. The Droid is the most exciting device on Verizon Wireless right now, and Verizon Wireless is where a lot of people want to be."

Me? I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
