RFID for Patient Safety

TMCnet today picks up on news that SkyeTek has more than 30 customers using its technology in "vital patient safety applications." The companies are embedding SkyeTek's RFID technology in products for everything from lab analysis to LASIK eye surgery.
One such customer, TioMed, has integrated SkyeTek's RFID reader tech and Wi-Fi connectivity into its BASICHemo handset in order to automate type matching prior to a blood transfusion -- once the handset matches the Blood type
on the patient's RFID-tagged wristband wit the blood type on the blood unit's RFID tag, the transfusion is allowed to proceed -- and the handset uses Wi-Fi to send key data to central database throughout the procedure.
"We launched our BASICHemo system in April, and since then have experienced very strong demand -- hospitals see that they can save patient lives and increase medical staff productivity by using this automated solution," says Marco Rossi, Director of Engineering for TioMed.
