Singapore Greenlights Ultrawideband

Singapore's Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) this week gave approval (finally!) to a regulatory framework for ultrawideband devices, which it says will be formally adopted by the end of the year.

"The proposed framework will enable UWB players to deploy this emerging technology in Singapore easily," says IDA deptuy chief executive Leong Keng Thai. "It will open up new avenues of growth for our infocomm sector. We can expect the introduction and eventual proliferation of UWB applications to bring about greater benefits for consumers and businesses."

"The authority has allotted the 3,400- to 10,600-MHz spectrum bands and set an emissions cap of -70 dBm/MHz for most UWB applications, though it noted that devices exceeding those limits could be used in Singapore with IDA approval 'on a case-by-case basis,'" writes EE Times' Jonathan Hopfner.

"According to IDA, most devices from places such as Japan and Europe will not need a license to be used in Singapore," writes ZDNet Asia's Victoria Ho.
