With curious timing at the height of iPhone 3G buzz, Palm, Inc. and Sprint today launched the Palm Treo 800w, with support for EV-DO Rev. A, Wi-Fi and GPS.
"It will sell for $249.99 after discounts and rebates, and is subject to a two-year contract," notes Computerworld's Matt Hamblen. "That puts the price above the 8GB iPhone 3G model, which sells for $199 and also has Wi-Fi, GPS and access to AT&T Inc.'s fast 3G network."
Gizmodo's Adrian Covert is, basically, unimpressed. "As far as Windows Mobile phones go, the 800w is a pretty good one," he writes. "It's no frills as far as smartphones go, but this is almost exclusively for the enterprise crowd. It's not the prettiest, nor is it the smallest, but is powerful enough to run Windows Mobile 6.1 like it should."
What bothers me is that this appears to be the end of the Palm OS - which was the only reason I had any affection for Palm devices. Ah, well - on to the iPhone 3G...
