VNUnet's James Brown reports that the the University of Bath is working on ways to use nanotechnology to create wireless chips, with the aim of increasing processor speeds by a factor of 500.
"Scientists at the university want to use microprocessors with magnets just a few atoms wide to move electrons around the chip, removing the resistance caused by physical wires," Brown writes.
Dr. Alain Nogaret of the university's Department of Physics says the potential is enormous.
"Using this technology, we could make microprocessors reach speeds of up to 1 Terahertz, 500 times faster than what is available," he says.
