Lenovo, Toshiba, Asus and Acer have announced brand spankin' new WiMax-enabled laptops in time for the launch of Sprint's Xohm WiMax service in Baltimore.
"Lenovo, which is among the first to release WiMax enabled laptops, said it will offer the technology in its ThinkPad and IdeaPad range of notebook PCs," writes Wired's Priya Ganapati. "In all, it will have five WiMax enabled notebooks ready to retail for prices starting at $720... Other companies such as acer and Toshiba are likely to have WiMax enabled models available by the end of the year, while Dell, Panasonic and Sony will launch their WiMax laptops in 2009."
"While WiMax promoters were not able to keep their $30 target for the WiMax hardware cost for now, the WiMax chip is substantially cheaper than an EVDO or HSDPA option," writes TG Daily's Wolfgang Gruener. "Both Lenovo and Acer are offering WiMax capability for a premium of about $60."
"Toshiba's offering is a nicely spec'd 13-inch Satellite, which seems to be the sweet spot of the bunch," notes Gizmodo's Matt Buchanan.
