The Death of Disney Mobile

One more MVNO down... Disney Mobile announced this week that it will be ceasing operations as of December 31st - and that Disney-related content and applications are no longer be available for purchase, effective immediately.

The company will be offering reimbursements for handsets, accessories and content purchased directly through Disney Mobile. There's a FAQ offering a little more info here.

"Disney Mobile's shutdown marks the second failed mobile venture for the media company: Disney cancelled its ESPN-branded phones last year, shifting content developed for the service to Verizon Wireless," writes Digital Trends News' Geoff Duncan.

And the same may be true for Disney Mobile... as Wired's Terrence Russell notes, "The closure doesn't mark the end of Disney's mobile aspirations, as company executives have announced that the move will ultimately facilitate a more profitable transition to its Family Center suite via another major wireless provider."
