The iPhone Price Drop: 3G iPhone Coming Soon... or Not?

Pricing for the iPhone in the UK from O2 and Carphone Warehouse has dropped by almost $200, leading some pundits to wonder if this is yet another sign that the 3G iPhone is coming soon... and others to disagree.
"Apple always gives the go ahead to reduce the price of something just before they decide to discontinue that model and then launch a new one, and that could very well be the new Apple 3G iPhone," writes Peter at Product-Reviews.
"One thing has been worrying me, though," notes Wired's Charlie Sorrel. "The original iPhone was announced six months early so the news came from Apple instead of leaking from the FCC approval process. If the 3G iPhone is due this summer, where are the FCC filings?"
What's more, as BBC News' Rory Cellan-Jones notes, "it appears to be simply an O2 promotion, with Carphone Warehouse joining in, without any involvement from Apple. I've just confirmed with them that the price at the Apple store will stay the same - so there are going to be plenty of unsold iPhones stacking up there..."
