T-Mobile today announced the nationwide launch of T-Mobile @Home starting July 2nd - along with a new $10-per-month unlimited plan that's aimed squarely at persuading customers to eliminate their home phone service.
"T-Mobile's endgame is not to become a major force in home phone services, where margins and customers are declining," notes BusinessWeek's Olga Kharif. "Instead, @Home is about delivering a blow to wireless competitors. With the U.S. wireless market near saturation, service providers now have to grow by stealing customers from each other with sweet prices and sweeter deals."
"No question, it is an enticing offer: an all-you-can eat phone service for $10 per month, no strings attached," writes TG Daily's Wolfgang Gruener. "Well, almost: You can only add this service to an existing wireless (cell phone) plan with T-Mobile, and those $10 will only cover calls made within the U.S. (and most likely Canada). International calls will be extra. But still: T-Mobile's offer is a game-changing move and undercuts similar VoIP service from companies like Vonage or AT&T, which are currently priced around $25 per month."
