The Korea Times' Cho Jin-seo reports today that U.S. military officials recently visited Samsung Electronics in Korea to demo the company's WiBro technology, and are currently negotiating a $3 billion deal with the company.

The mobile WiMax technology is already being implemented by the South Korean military as part of its 'Ubiquitous Defense' project.

"We are currently fine-tuning the deal with the U.S. military about the timeframe and the size of the procurement," a Samsung official said. "When the deal is signed, personal and military communication equipments of the U.S. military will be fully reorganized to be based on the wireless Internet network."

"The U.S. military is the largest single buying power in the world," Cho writes. "It has more than 1.4 million troops in active duty all around the world, and its budget amounts to $441.6 billion this year, which is larger than the military budgets of the next 20 largest spending nations combined."
