The following is from Peter Kremer of Holland's Wireless Baard:

Tanzania's Family Alliance for Development and Cooperation (FADECO) began exploring the possibility of extending their satellite Internet connection to schools and other neighborhood organizations, they got help from groups like WSFII, WNDW, IICD and Wireless Nederland.
"Local ICT specialist John Kibuuka was probably the first one in Africa that got a copy of Wireless Networking in the Developing World and managed to set up an eight kilometer link to a school just seven months after that," Kremer writes. "John received training in Denmark and The Netherlands, where he picked up wardriving for a hobby..."
John Kibuuka's excellent blog is here, describing the process of setting up a wireless connection at Tanzania's Karagwe Secondary School -- and he's got tons of great photos here.
