India's Financial Express reports today that the Government of West Bengal has announced plans to invest approximately Rs 15 crore in the Danish wireless tech company Wireless Innovation Platform Labs (WIP Labs).
Ramjee Prasad, chairman of the WIP Labs board, says the company will develop 4G technologies with the help of local universities.
The company will build its headquarters in Kolkata (a.k.a. Calcutta), with the intention of establishing offices in New Delhi and Chennai as well as in Oman, Thailand, and a South American country by the end of 2008.
There's a lot of quid pro quo involved -- the West Bengal government will provide about 20 acres of land to WIP Labs, and WIP Labs plans to provide wireless Internet access throughout Kolkata.
