Wi-Fi Planet's Eric Griffith today looks at Whisher, a startup launching at DEMO 07 that's targeting the exact same market as FON and its legions of Foneros:
"This is a way to create a Wi-Fi community without purchasing hardware or reconfiguring what you have," says Whisher co-founder and CEO Ferran Moreno, in a clear swipe at the competition from FON, which similarly wants to build a Wi-Fi community. FON requires special hardware or reconfigured hardware, usually routers with new firmware, though the company is preparing to release software to turn a Mac into a "FONspot." Whisher says it can already do that with downloads running on Windows, Macintosh and Linux computers.

Whisher does not compete with Fon. On the contrary, Whisher *compliments* Fon. I have just set my proprietary, dual-SSID "La Fonera" router (from Fon) up as a Whisher hotspot, in addition to being a Fon hotspot. This doesn't even break my "Fonero Promise" with Fon because their firmware and config is 100% untouched. Since Whisher provides individual access-control to encrypted hotspots, Fon would be very wise to partner with Whisher. Though Whisher is not about charging for wifi, a mechanism like Whisher's would allow Foneros to enjoy optional wifi encryption, and limit access for the duration of their paid online time.
