WiBro Heading to Italy

Filed in archive WiMax/WiBro by jeff goldman on January 31, 2006

Reuters notes today that Telecom Italia is considering deploying WiBro technology throughout italylinks, if tests next month at the Turin Winter Olympics are successful. If that additional deployment does happen, it'll be aimed at bringing Internet access to Italy's poorer rural areas.

The deployment at the Olympics will be the first large-scale demonstration of WiBro (South Korea's version of WiMAX) outside Korea.

Key to the Olympic deployment -- in addition to equipping 50 select people with WiBro equipment -- will be a "WiBro Shuttle Bus," which will let users watch television, play online games and hold videoconferences.

Also today, PhoneMag sums up other recent WiBro news.
