WiBro is for Porn

At Blogcritics.org, SecurePlay picks up on an editorial in The Korea Times which looks at the risks of what it calls an emerging "webidemic" of porn and gaming addiction tied to the deployment of WiBro.

Since Internet usage in Korea has long been a public activity (at an Internet cafe, at school, at work, etc.), SecurePlay notes, mobile services like WiBro change the landscape significantly by allowing for more private Internet access. "It will be interesting to see if the rise of a private Internet in Korea and elsewhere changes the types of issues that they are facing," SecurePlay writes.

The Korea Times article quotes Hwang Jin-ku, a senior researcher at the state-sponsored Korea Institute for Youth Development, as saying WiBro is likely to serve as a portal leading teenagers to adult content. "Presently, young students cannot access porn sites when they want to, either at home or at Internet cafes, due to the eyes of their parents [at home] or other customers [at Internet cafes]," he says. "But WiBro provides a new way for teenagers to get access to hardcore content without being disturbed by anyone. That is a big deal."
