WiBro Sweeps Korea
January 25, 2006
An enthusiastic article in today's Korea Times looks at the current outlook for WiBro, South Korea's version of portable WiMAX. Noting that Korean carriers (KT, SK Telecom) and foreign companies (intel, Alcatel) are all showing interest in the technology, the article says tech experts are "ratcheting up their evaluations on the commercial viability of WiBro, which will be launched here midway through the year."
According to the article, KT plans to invest 500 billion Won (about $500 million) in WiBro this year, and SK Telecom promises 170 billion Won (approx. $170 million). Intel Vice President Scott Richardson says, "As the first mobile WiMax service, we believe WiBro will be an important example of the benefits WiMax can deliver."
