Wi-Fi Troubles in Lompoc

The Lompoc Record's Neil Nisperos reports that his city's Wi-Fi network, which has so far cost the city of Lompoc, California $2.9 million (!), has seen a total of 200 cancelations since the service began in September of 2006. There are currently 370 subscribers to the Wi-Fi network.
"Most of the cancellations, 132 of the 200, have been from customers complaining of weak or no signal," Nisperos writes. "The city is working to resolve the poor connectivity issue through the use of signal strengthening hardware, called a bridge, for users with that problem. The city is also hiring a wireless technician
who would go out to customers and resolve connectivity issues by visiting the home and advising the customer through the connection process."
"About 10 new Wi-Fi customers sign up each month, according to city data," Nisperos adds. "An initial feasibility study by consultant Mark McKibben of McKibben Consulting said the city would need 4,000 customers to break even."
