Okay, so the title of the article ("Stunned Londoners see Wi-Fi Work on Water") might be a bit much, but The Register notes today that Thames Online will be providing about 12 kilometers of coverage along the Thames from Westminster to Greenwich.

"Taking to the water is an increasingly popular option for frustrated commuters," writes reporter Chris Williams.

It's a joint venture of codeCreation and Meshhopper, using mesh architecture to provide service from hotspots set up along the riverbanks. If you're in London, though, act fast: Thames Online is offering free access to the service until April for the first 5,000 people to sign up -- and apparently, only about 500 have taken them up on the offer so far. Once the trial's done, the service will cost £2.95 an hour, £5.95 a day, £7.95 a week or £9.95 a month.
