Wi-Fi Will Kill You!

The Inquirer's Tony Dennis reports today that anti-Wi-Fi types have found a voice in Goldsworth Residents Against the Masts, or gramlinks, a group based in Woking in the U.K. The group has produced a 12-page booklet called 'The Downsides of the Mobile/Wireless Revolution.'

One of the booklet's contentions, Dennis writes, is that "using a Wi-Fi enabled laptop computer in your lap puts you in grave danger of irradiating your gonads (male private parts)."

Dennis isn't very forgiving in his mockery of GRAM's perspective. "The group appear to have got hold of something called a COM meter which gives out readings using a P.Max (Precautionary Maximum) rating," he writes. "Whatever device the group points this at, appears to go way off the scale. Including microwave ovens, naturally."

"The same sort of readings will probably apply if they go anywhere near heavy duty electrical cables -- which kind of negates the suggestion that wires are 'safer' than wireless," Dennis writes.

At the same time, though, Dennis is willing to concede that GRAM's research is "extremely thorough and shouldn't be merely ignored."

Clearly, this is an issue that isn't going away any time soon.
