Wi-Fi, WiMAX and WiBro: Back to Basics
Filed in archive Emerging Tech by jeff goldman on April 17, 2006

The International Herald Tribune today provides an overview of current wireless technology, including Wi-Fi, WiMAX and WiBro, as well as the standards and organizations behind them.
"Wi-Fi has entered the general lexicon of millions of laptop users who have become accustomed to flipping a switch and jumping onto a high-speed Internet connection, whether at a coffee shop, library or park," writes reporter Eric Sylvers. "But what exactly is Wi-Fi, and what about those other acronyms beginning with "Wi" that we have been hearing about of late?"
Sylvers does make a couple of mistakes, though: he suggests that Wi-Fi is short for "Wireless fidelity
," and that WiBro is mobile WiMAX. WiBro is actually the Korean version of WiMAX, and while it may offer some mobility, true mobile WiMAX (802.16e) hasn't yet been deployed.
