Mulled Marc today picks up on a bit of news from ABC's Paul Harvey -- a new device from StarChase promises to get rid of car chases forever, by providing cops with a wireless dart that they can shoot at a fleeing car. The dart will then provide the cop with GPS tracking info transmitted over wireless, so they don't have to work so hard to chase down the suspect.
Sounds great, until you get into the details -- a video promo on StarChase's web site states that "the StarChase system is made of a commercial, off-the-shelf tracking projectile with a miniature GPS receiver, radio transmitter and power supply, and a launcher much like a paintball gun, which can be handheld or mounted on a police car."
So we're gonna have cops driving around with paintball guns, shooting speeding cars as they race down the freeway? Sounds a lot worse than a simple car chase to me...
